Saturday, November 3, 2018 // Berean BAPTIST CHURCH, Brooklyn

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. (Romans: 12:9-13)

The 227th Annual Meeting of the American Baptist Churches of Metropolitan New York, its predecessor organizations, and the Annual Business Meetings of the Baptist Fresh Air Home Society and the Metropolitan Baptist Camps to be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018. These meeting will be hosted by Berean Baptist Church, where the Reverend Dr. Arlee Griffin, Jr., serves as Senior Pastor. Berean Baptist Church is located at 1641 Bergen Street in Brooklyn, New York 11213.

Our 2018 Annual theme Traveling Together Towards Transformation, emerging from the teachings in Romans 12, will shape our meeting. Traveling Together Towards Transformation urges us to remember that we are called to progress in our faith, to move forward, and not remain stationary. In this progression though we are not traveling alone, but are yoked with others, in community, and in faithfulness to the cross and resurrection of Christ.  Traveling Together Towards Transformation looks to God for the transformation to happen so that we might be in relationship, not only with God, but in community as we share together in a common life of faith, and together engage in service and mission as American Baptists in Metropolitan New York. The theme is connected to our ABCMNY Living Our Vision and Values Strategic Plan, which urges us toward excellence to create greater opportunities to engage together in mission and ministry.

Of course we come together to tend to the business of the region, where delegates represent the interests of their congregation and the region at large; this is important work. Yet our business is inspired through worship, bible study and fellowship. The Rev. Dr. Obery M. Hendricks, Jr., will be leading us in our Bible Study. Dr. Hendricks is the Visiting Scholar at Columbia University. He is a provocative and sought out public commentator on the intersection of faith, politics and social policy in the U.S. He is the author of several books including Living Water, The Politics of Jesus and The Universe Bends Toward Justice.  Our missional speaker will be Amanda Tyler, Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty.  Noted as a “powerful advocate and rising star in the sector” by the Nonprofit Times, she was named one of the nation’s top 50 nonprofit leaders in 2018. According to Tyler, “There is no limit what God can do through us to preserve religious liberty for all of God’s children.”

Registration and continental breakfast begin at 7:30 AM. The morning session will begin at 8:45 AM, and we will plan to conclude at 3:30 PM. A more detailed schedule and practical information (child care, transportation, etc.) can be found online.
